How Many Days Are Enough for Kashmir?

For most first-time travellers, 5 to 6 days is the right length for a Kashmir trip — enough to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam without racing between them, with Sonmarg added as a day trip if the pace allows. Shorter than that, and you spend more time in the car than at any destination. Longer, and you're either padding the itinerary with repeat sightseeing or genuinely extending into Sonmarg overnight stays, Yusmarg, or a Ladakh add-on.

Here's how that breaks down by traveller type, and where the common planning mistakes actually happen.

Kashmir Trip Duration: Quick Comparison

Duration Who it suits What you'll cover What you'll miss
3–4 days Business travellers with a free weekend, short work trips Srinagar + one destination (usually Gulmarg) Pahalgam, Sonmarg, any houseboat overnight
5–6 days First-time visitors, couples, small families Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, optional Sonmarg day trip Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, extended trekking
7 days Travellers who want a slower pace or one offbeat stop All four core destinations + a buffer day Multi-day treks, Ladakh
10+ days Honeymooners, photography trips, Kashmir–Ladakh combines Everything above + Zoji La crossing to Leh/Kargil Nothing major, but requires flexible dates for weather

The mistake we see most often at the booking stage is travellers trying to fit all four hill stations into 4 days because that's what a flight sale made affordable. Kashmir's roads are mountain roads, not highways — the 90 km from Srinagar to Pahalgam takes roughly 2.5–3 hours, not the 2 hours a map app suggests, because of single-lane stretches through Anantnag district and seasonal traffic near Pahalgam's checkpost. Build that into your plan before you build the itinerary, not after.

The Distances That Actually Decide Your Itinerary

  • Srinagar to Gulmarg: ~50 km, about 1.5–2 hours. Closest hill station to Srinagar, which is why it works as a day trip even on a short itinerary.
  • Srinagar to Pahalgam: ~90–95 km, 2.5–3 hours. Sits in the Lidder Valley; Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are further local drives from here, not from Srinagar.
  • Srinagar to Sonmarg: ~80 km, 2–2.5 hours. Best done April through October; the route can shut with early snowfall or after heavy rain, so we don't fix it as the last day of a tight itinerary — if it's cancelled, you want a spare day, not a refund conversation.

Because Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg all radiate out from Srinagar rather than connecting directly to each other, Srinagar functions as your base for entry and exit no matter how many days you have. This is why we structure Kashmir itineraries as loops back through Srinagar rather than a straight line — it cuts backtracking and lets you leave the houseboat luggage behind for day trips instead of repacking a bag at every stop.

Our Recommended 6-Day Kashmir Itinerary

  • Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar: Check into a houseboat on Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake (Nigeen is quieter, Dal has the more famous view). Evening Shikara ride.
  • Day 2 — Gulmarg: Day trip. Gondola Phase 1 goes to Kongdoori (2,950 m); Phase 2 continues to Apharwat (around 3,950 m) and is weather-dependent — it can close without notice, so we tell travellers not to plan it as the only activity of the day.
  • Day 3 — Transfer to Pahalgam: Check into Pahalgam, afternoon at Betaab Valley.
  • Day 4 — Pahalgam sightseeing: Aru Valley or Chandanwari, depending on road conditions that week.
  • Day 5 — Return to Srinagar via Sonmarg: Thajiwas Glacier viewpoint, then back to Srinagar for the night.
  • Day 6 — Srinagar: Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar), local shopping, departure.

This sequence keeps the longest drives (to and from Pahalgam) on days when you're also checking in or out, so no day is purely a transfer day.

What Changes the Number of Days You Need

Season. April to June brings mild weather and blooming gardens, and every road is open — the easiest window for a 5-day plan. September to November has clearer skies for photography. December to February is snow season: Sonmarg becomes inaccessible and the itinerary shifts toward Gulmarg skiing and Srinagar heritage sites, so budget the same days differently rather than fewer of them. July–August is monsoon season with a real risk of landslides on the Pahalgam and Sonmarg roads — we generally advise against tight itineraries in these months because a single day's washout has nowhere to absorb into a 5-day plan.

Pace preference. A photography-focused or slow-travel visitor gains more from 7–8 days with one overnight in Pahalgam and one in Sonmarg than from cramming a fifth destination into a 5-day trip.

Add-ons. A Kashmir–Ladakh combine crossing Zoji La Pass needs 10 days minimum, since the pass itself adds a full travel day each way and altitude acclimatisation in Leh isn't optional.

What a 5–6 Day Trip Costs (Approximate)

These are per-person estimates excluding flights, and they move with season and hotel category, so treat them as ranges, not quotes:

  • Budget: ₹13,000–₹18,000 — standard houseboat, shared or non-AC cab, 3-star hotels in Pahalgam/Gulmarg.
  • Mid-range: ₹22,000–₹35,000 — deluxe houseboat, private sedan or Ertiga, 4-star hotels.
  • Premium: ₹45,000–₹75,000 — luxury houseboat or 5-star Srinagar stay, private Innova Crysta, boutique properties in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.

Cab category matters more to comfort than most first-time travellers expect: the roads to Pahalgam and Sonmarg have enough elevation change that a standard sedan works fine for 2 people but feels tight for a family of 4 with luggage over multiple days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to plan a Kashmir trip?

Start from the season you're travelling in, not the destinations — the same 6 days look different in April versus December. Fix your Srinagar arrival and departure dates first, since flights into Srinagar get expensive fast during peak spring and autumn weekends, then build the Gulmarg/Pahalgam/Sonmarg sequence around whichever dates you've locked in.

How do I book a Kashmir tour package?

Most operators, including Leisure Trips, will ask for your travel dates, group size, and hotel category preference (standard, deluxe, or luxury) before quoting a fixed price — cab, houseboat, and hotel costs are bundled differently depending on season, so a quote from April isn't valid for December.

Is it better to book Kashmir online or through an agency?

Booking hotels and cabs separately online can save money on paper, but Kashmir's road and weather disruptions (a closed Sonmarg road, a cancelled Gondola day) are common enough that having one point of contact who can rearrange the itinerary same-day is usually worth the difference in price, especially outside the April–June window.

Ready to Plan Your Kashmir Trip?

Every Kashmir itinerary we build starts with your travel dates and pace, not a fixed template — because a 6-day trip in April and a 6-day trip in December shouldn't look the same.
