What Makes This Pilgrimage Genuinely Unusual

The Ashtavinayak is a circuit, not a list. Tradition says the yatra begins at Morgaon and ends by returning to Morgaon after all seven other temples, so the journey closes where it opened. Each of the eight temples holds a swayambhu (self-manifested) idol with its own legend and its own form of Ganesha, and the landscape changes with them: river banks at Morgaon and Siddhatek, the Western Ghats foothills at Pali and Mahad, and a hillside cave temple at Lenyadri. Several of the temples also carry the mark of the Peshwas, who patronised them in the 18th century, and Theur was a Peshwa summer retreat.

Places Covered

The temples, in the traditional yatra order:

1. Mayureshwar (Moreshwar), Morgaon The starting point of the yatra, on the banks of the Karha River in the Pune district, around 55 km from Pune.

2. Siddhivinayak, Siddhatek On the banks of the Bhima River in the Ahmednagar district, known as the giver of siddhis. This is the Siddhivinayak of Siddhatek, not the Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai.

3. Ballaleshwar, Pali In the Raigad district, below the Western Ghats, off the Mumbai-Pune route near Nagothane. The prasad here is besan laddu rather than the usual modak.

4. Varadvinayak, Mahad Also in the Raigad district, near Khopoli, about 38 km from Pali.

5. Chintamani, Theur Around 30 km from Pune, home to Chintamani Ganapati, the reliever of worries. Theur was a summer retreat of the Peshwas, who built gardens and mansions here.

6. Girijatmaj, Lenyadri Near Junnar, a cave temple and often described as the most distinctive of the eight.

7. Vighneshwar (Vighnahar), Ozar Dedicated to Ganesha as the destroyer of obstacles, in the Pune district.

8. Mahaganapati, Ranjangaon The final temple in the traditional sequence, around 60 km from Pune, with an idol that reflects strength and protection.

All eight temples are open every day of the year, from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Sample 3-Day / 2-Night Itinerary

Day 1 — Morgaon, Siddhatek and Pali: Early start from Pune. Darshan at Mayureshwar (Morgaon), Siddhivinayak (Siddhatek) and Ballaleshwar (Pali). Overnight near Pali or Mahad.

Day 2 — Mahad, Theur and Lenyadri: Darshan at Varadvinayak (Mahad), Chintamani (Theur) and Girijatmaj (Lenyadri). Overnight near Junnar or Ozar.

Day 3 — Ozar, Ranjangaon and return: Darshan at Vighneshwar (Ozar) and Mahaganapati (Ranjangaon), then return to Pune for departure.

The route follows the traditional order, with Pali and Mahad grouped together below the Ghats and Ozar and Ranjangaon grouped together on the Pune side, which keeps backtracking to a minimum.

Best Time to Visit

The temples are open year-round, but October to March is the most comfortable for long days on the road. Festival days, especially around Ganesh Chaturthi, bring very large crowds, so book early and expect longer queues. Dress modestly for temple visits.

No. The Ashtavinayak Siddhivinayak is at Siddhatek in the Ahmednagar district. The famous Siddhivinayak in Mumbai is a different temple and is not part of the Ashtavinayak circuit.

Is there a fixed order for the yatra?

There is a traditional order, which starts and ends at Morgaon, and this itinerary follows it. Many pilgrims follow this order as it is considered the proper sequence.

Can all eight temples really be covered in 3 days?

Yes, with early starts. Days 1 and 2 involve long stretches on the road, so the schedule is built around covering three temples a day and then two on the final day.

Is this trip suitable for senior travellers?

Most temples are reachable by road with short walks. Lenyadri is a cave temple on a hillside and involves a climb of steps, so seniors may want to plan extra time there.

What should I wear or bring?

Modest, comfortable clothing, easy-to-remove footwear, and a water bottle. Carry cash for offerings.

Day 01: MUMBAI ARRIVAL– PALI – MAHAD – PUNE

Upon arrival at your preferred pickup location in Mumbai, meet our representative and begin your sacred Ashtavinayak Yatra. Your first stop is the revered Ballaleshwar Temple at Pali, the only Ashtavinayak temple named after a devotee, where Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Ballaleshwar. After seeking blessings, continue to Mahad to visit the sacred Varad Vinayak Temple, one of the eight revered Ashtavinayak shrines. The idol here is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), and devotees visit the temple to seek blessings for prosperity and the fulfillment of wishes. After completing the darshan, proceed to Pune. Upon arrival, check in to the hotel and enjoy an overnight stay in Pune.

Day 02: PUNE – THEUR – MORGAON – SIDDHATEK – RANJANGAON – PUNE

After breakfast, proceed for a full-day pilgrimage covering four sacred Ashtavinayak temples. Begin with the Chintamani Ganpati Temple at Theur, where devotees seek relief from worries and mental stress. Continue to Morgaon, home to the revered Mayureshwar (Moreshwar) Temple, considered the foremost temple of the Ashtavinayak circuit and an important starting point for the pilgrimage. Later, travel to Siddhatek to visit the sacred Siddhivinayak Temple, situated on the banks of the Bhima River and believed to grant spiritual success and fulfillment. Conclude the day's pilgrimage at Ranjangaon, where the magnificent Mahaganapati Temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha in his powerful Mahaganapati form. After completing the darshan, return to Pune for an overnight stay.

Day 03: PUNE – LENYADRI – OZAR – PUNE DEPARTURE

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and proceed to Lenyadri to visit the unique Girijatmaj Ganpati Temple, the only Ashtavinayak shrine situated inside a series of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha as the son of Goddess Parvati, the temple is reached by climbing a flight of steps and offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills. After darshan, continue to Ozar to seek blessings at the famous Vighneshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha as the remover of obstacles and located on the banks of the Kukadi River. Upon completion of the pilgrimage, proceed to Pune Airport/Railway Station for your onward journey, carrying the divine blessings of the sacred Ashtavinayak temples.
